Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award
for all 11 official South African languages

Maskew Miller Longman, the leading South African educational publisher, has a tradition of embracing cultural diversity. We are proud of our literary offerings in all 11 official languages and to this end are pleased to announce the launch of the Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award competition where entries for original and unpublished youth novels are invited. We aim to further develop literature in all 11 official South African languages and encourage aspirant writer’s to explore their talent.

 

The Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award is unique in that it is the only award that gives equal weighting to all 11 official languages.

 

The Maskew Miller Longman Literature Award will be an annual event with a different genre being explored each year. The focus for 2006 is novels for young South Africans today.

 

The total prize money exceeds R150 000 in cash with the winning entry in each language category receiving R10 000 and runners-up R5 000 each. All winning entries will be published and the runners-up also stand the chance of having their work published. Experts on youth literature will screen all entries submitted while final judging will be performed by prominent literary figures.

 

Maskew Miller Longman will be conducting writers' workshops countrywide, including a special workshop at the Cape Town International Bookfair in June 2006, to assist aspirant writers.

THE SHIVA NAIPAUL MEMORIAL PRIZE
Deadline 31 May each year

Shiva Naipaul was one of the most gifted and accomplished writers of our time. After his death in 1985, at the age of 40, The Spectator established an annual prize in his memory.


The Shiva Naipaul Memorial Prize will be awarded to the writer best able to describe a visit to a foreign place or people. The award is not for travel writing in the conventional sense, but for the most acute and profound observation of a culture alien to the writer. Such a culture might be found as easily within the writer's native country as outside it.

The winner will receive a cash prize of £3,000.
The winning entry will be published in The Spectator.

Rules
1. The award is open to English language writers of any nationality under the age of 35 on the closing date for entries (31 May).
2. Submissions should not previously have been published and should be not more than 3,000 words.
3. Entries must reach The Spectator by 31 May 2005.
4. Entries will not be returned and no correspondence concerning entries can be entered into.
5. In all matters concerning the competition the decision of the Editor is final.

The judges this year are the Editor of The Spectator Boris Johnson, the Assistant Editor of The Spectator Mary Wakefield, the Literary Editor of The Spectator Mark Amory, and the writer Hilary Mantel.

1. Entries should be typed double-spaced.

2. Entrants must give the following details on a separate sheet of paper:

surname and forenames; complete
address; date of birth

The Caine Prize for African Writing
Deadline : 31 January each year

An annual award for a published short story by a writer from Africa. The story should be 3,000 - 10,000 words, and in English. It's publication can be anywhere in the world.

  • Deadline : 31 January of each year. Works must have been published between 1 February of the previous year and the closing date.)
  • Prize : There is a cash prize of $15,000 for the winning author and a travel award for each of the short-listed candidates (up to five in all).

There is no application form. Submissions should be made by publishers, in the form of 12 original published copies of the work for consideration.  These should be sent to the address below.  Details of online publication by a recognised internet magazine should be emailed to us, in the form of a letter from the publisher containing details of the url where we may access the story.

Winning and short-listed authors will be invited to participate in writers’ workshops in Africa, London and elsewhere as resources permit.

EU literary award

A new literary award to encourage new South African writing in the EU-countries, in partnership with Jacana publishers, This Day and Safm.

  • Prizes : R 25.000
    Publication by Jacana
    A trip to a literary festival in Europe.
  • Writers should submit their manuscripts before 1 October to Jacana Publishers.

Science Fiction Short Story Competition
Annual Competition

Once again, Science Fiction South Africa is running its national Nova Short Story Competition.
Now in its 24th year, the competition encourages writing in the Science Fiction and Fantasy field and promotes local talent. This year sees a double competition, with additional prize money being awarded to contributors whose stories are Afrixcan in thme or backfrop. A special prize for those under 18 will also be awarded (if there are enough entries of a suitable quality).
